I took a kayak fishing charter with Kaan. What a great time! I was in Florida with the family on vacation, and snuck away for half a day to go fishing, but didn't have my gear. He supplied everything, and I got to try out the peddle kayak I have been looking to purchase before I laid out the money they cost. He answered all my questions about the kayak, took us to some remote fishing spots, and was a great guy to shoot the bull with! OLD TOWN AUTOPILOT HAS A PROBLEM… 😳 They Updated the Steering Motor — But You Pay $159.99! This is the follow-up to my previous video about the strange noise coming from the Minn Kota steering motor on my Old Town Sportsman Autopilot 120. I contacted Old Town directly to find out what was happening. Old Town reviewed my video and told me: “The sound from your motor appears to be early signs of a possible steering motor failure.” They also confirmed that my original steering motor is outside the 2-year warranty period. But here's where things get interesting… Old Town offers an updated steering motor replacement: 🔧 AP Drive Steering Motor Replacement Part #01.1334.0007 💰 $159.99 MSRP According to what I have learned from the Autopilot community, the original steering motor housing had three weep holes, while the updated replacement motor no longer has those openings. My concern is that those openings may allow water—and particularly saltwater when the kayak is used in saltwater environments—to reach the internal steering components and contribute to corrosion and eventual failure. I want to be very clear: I am sharing what I have found and my experience, not claiming that Old Town has officially acknowledged these holes as a design defect. However, if the steering motor was redesigned and the three openings were removed, I think it's fair to ask: Why shouldn't owners of the original design receive the updated replacement as a warranty or goodwill replacement? In my case, Old Town declined my request for a free replacement and stated that their decision is final. So now I'm sharing the information with the Autopilot community. 🔧 WHAT IS THE SOLUTION? The current replacement available from Old Town is: AP Drive Steering Motor Replacement — #01.1334.0007 $159.99 MSRP And that's just the part. If you're not comfortable working with the electrical connections, wiring, steering components, and installation yourself, you'll potentially have additional labor costs to have the motor installed. OLD TOWN AUTOPILOT HAS A PROBLEM! PART 2 — $159.99 Steering Motor Fix
Old Town Autopilot 120 – Minn Kota Motor Steering Housing Problem! 😳 My Old Town Sportsman Autopilot 120 has started making a strange, rough mechanical sound whenever I turn the Minn Kota motor left or right and on spotlock. While researching the problem, I came across a photo posted by another Old Town Autopilot owner in a Facebook Autopilot owners forum. The owner opened up their steering motor housing , and what they found inside was significant corrosion around the gears, shaft, and internal components. 📸 The photos shown in this video are from that Autopilot owner and are NOT photos of my own steering motor housing. I'm sharing them to help illustrate what may potentially be happening inside my steering motor housing. I also noticed three small factory openings along the top edge of the steering motor housing. My theory is that these openings may be designed for ventilation and air circulation, possibly helping prevent heat from building up inside the motor housing around the gears and other components. However, if these openings are intended for ventilation, I'm wondering whether they could also allow water and saltwater exposure to reach the internal components over time. ⚠️ This is only my theory. I don't know for certain what the three holes are designed for, which is why I'm asking the Autopilot community for answers. 👇 I NEED YOUR HELP! I’ve been kayak fishing for 10 years, but I had NEVER tried targeting redfish with cut bait… until this trip! 🎣 I wanted to test out a technique I’ve heard so many anglers talk about — using cut bait to target redfish. Normally, fresh ladyfish is one of the go-to baits, but I couldn’t catch any fresh bait that day. So I decided to use a fish I had caught on a previous trip, thawed it out, cut it into pieces, and gave frozen cut bait a shot. The cut bait didn’t produce a single redfish for me. Instead, I spent most of the day throwing soft plastics and absolutely loaded up on trout — probably 20–25 trout! 😳 But trout weren’t what I was looking for. I wanted REDFISH! Then the weather started moving in, the rain began, and I was already right next to the boat ramp getting ready to call it a day. I figured… ONE MORE CAST.
